For professional development opportunities during the day, the D.E.S.E.R.T.
Project in Tucson, AZ has a "Special Presenter" program - paraprofessionals
are trained to teach a 2 and 1/2 hour lesson based on the Private Eye,
grades K-8. They are used to release teachers for that amount of time
during the schoolday. They also have multiple lessons so that the
Collaborative Teachers meeting with the classroom teachers can have more
than one meeting with a group of teachers. This allows for continuity and
richness to the discussions, looking at student work over time, viewing
videos and/or other classrooms, etc. We must give credit to Mesa Public
Schools for the Special Presenter design. It's working beautifully this
first semester and next year we have plans for meeting about five times
throughout a school year focusing on a select number of schools.
