I would suggest working in sections first and then putting sections
together. I haven't had much experience but from my experience with
sculpture sections seem to be the best method. You might think about
plaiting portions of the bridge,tieing bunching of toothpicks together then
attaching then in some kind of way. You might want to use something like
dental floss which is very secure, wax thread or buttonhole thread that has
been waxed with bees wax.
A good idea might be to begin just by having a conversation with the
students on what they know about bridges and how they are put together.
Also they can begin to look at things around them, freeway overpasses,
ramps, balconies, etc.
There are books by outsider and folk artists, especially work done from
1930-50's who made structures out of toothpicks, matchsticks, cigerrette
(?) & candy wrappers etc.
