Hi all,
Here's some comments and another resource below related to working with
scientists.
Cheers,
Fred
Your email message, "Working with scientists," was forwarded to me by Ed
Nartowitz, science/math supervisor for Lawrence Township, NJ. I found
this very interesting because, as Outreach Director at the Princeton
Materials Institute I have been matching our scientists with teams of
elementary teachers for a couple of years now. I certainly agree with
the issues raised in your newsletter article. Two effective ways I have
found to deal with this issue are: 1) to have an orientation for the
scientists (which is really a "training" session for them in science ed
issues) before they begin; and 2) to create teams consisting of both
teachers and scientists and structure their activity around a particular
curriculum unit (in our case one of the STC or FOSS units adopted by
many of our regional schools.
