Hi all,
We're wondering how people are using the IFI Book in their professional
development work. I've heard a few things so far, and wanted to see if
there were other innovative ways of using the book that could be shared
among this group.
So far, one idea I've heard is that a project was thinking of using Chapter
8 (the Chapter about how Wendy Cheong, an experienced teacher in San
Francisco, spends the first part of the school year creating an environment
in her classroom conducive to inquiry), as a study group reading in order
to help their teachers begin to get a sense of what inquiry looks like in
the classroom, and how to take some do-able steps towards creating more of
an inquiry approach in their teaching.
Are their other ways that people have been using the book or others ideas
people are thinking about? Please send messages to the IFI-list for now.
I also wanted to let everyone know how to get additional copies of the IFI
book.
The most immediate approach is to get it on-line, print it out and copy it
(we'd love people to distribute this book as widely as possible so, we're
encouraging people to copy it and use it). It's located at:
http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/ifibook.html
and you can print out individual chapters, or the whole thing!
If you want to print documents out as PDF files (these end up looking
exactly like the book), the option to do this is located at the bottom of
the table of contents (TOC) page, and at the bottom of each individual
chapter page.
Please let me know if there's any difficulties with this.
To reserve and to order addional hardcopies of the book (NSF is currently
out of copies and is issuing another printing later this spring), go to the
NSF website
(www.nsf.gov), choose "Public & Media Information," then choose
"Documents." Type in #NSF99-148 to request a copy.
Or phone orders for small quantities of books (<50) can be placed by calling
301-947-2722, Large orders should be directed to 703-306-1625 x6863.
NSF covers shipping and handling fees for all orders. Books are sent 4th
class, and so may take 3-4 weeks to arrive (but because they are not yet
even printed, it may be a couple monthes or more before you receive
hardcopies).
Again, the quickest way to get extra copies is to go to the web site,
http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/ifibook.html
print it out, and make copies from that.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Fred
