In response to Fred's question about uses of the Foundations monograph on inquiry:
The Metro Nashville (Tennessee) Project has used the Foundations Inquiry monograph in several ways-- with teacher leaders as part of their professional development and in project-based study groups. Our science teacher leaders have asked for articles to share with principals and parents to provide a beginning understanding of inquiry. We shared "Lessons Learned: Addressing Common Misconceptions about Inquiry" and "What Children Gain by Learning Through Inquiry" for this purpose.
In addition, we have an Inquiry Study Group comprised of past participants to the Exploratorium institutes who take a proactive role on sharing strategies and ideas about inquiry in their personal school contexts. Several of these participants thought they might share the article on misconceptions about inquiry with school board members. Furthermore, in our most recent Institute for our science teacher leaders, we shared "Setting the Stage for Inquiry" as a case study of a teacher attempting inquiry with her students.
We have found that the chapters are very helpful, targeted for particular aspects of inquiry, and concise. They are very reader-friendly!
