The resource for principals that I mentioned earlier is a 75 page monograph
written by Inverness Research Associates. It can be found linked from the
inquiry education research part of the resources section of the IFI web
page at http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/research.html
Also by Inverness Research Associates of interest to adminitsrators is
short monograph for superintendents called Critical Supports For Elementary
Science Reform: The Top Ten Action Items For Superintendents located at:
http://www.inverness-research.org/reports/edccuser.html
and "Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!" The Anatomy And Politics Of Inquiry at:
http://www.inverness-research.org/reports/pol_inq.html
This is the text of the 1998 Catherine Molony Memorial Lecture given by
Mark St. John at the City College Workshop Center. This is an informal
lecture on the nature and practice of inquiry in the classroom and it's
political implications with regard to national standards.
I've heard of something that Karen Worth from EDC has presented, but I
haven't seen it myself - maybe others on this list have and can comment.
She shows, side by side, the skills that students must know and be able to
demonstrate in both the National Science Education Standards and the
National Education Standards for Language Arts ... and there is a lot of
overlap.
I've also heard from people that they have found chapters from the IFI
inquiry book to be particularly effective with administrators. I'm hoping
that people who have done this will share their experiences.
Best,
Fred
