Carol, in a workshop with our principals last year we started with an overview of what our elementary science curriculum is, as well as the assessment system we have in place to evaluate student understanding. They were glad to know what was expected of the teachers and that the assessments existed.
We also did a brief hands-on activity that was inquiry in nature, and compared that activity to a more cookbook-style activity. We asked the principals to talk about their reactions to the inquiry activity which was incredibly enthusiastic. They were excited to know what science should look like in the classrooms they visit, and to see how much more engaging inquiry science can be for students, as well as being more student centered, more engaging for students, and requiring critical thinking.

Good luck with your workshop!

Fred. Thanks for the new resource. I've been looking for one you sent earlier.....as I recall there was a resource for principals
that was mentioned earlier. Can yo send the title and publisher to me. Also, I'm preparing a workshop on our state (closely
aligned with national standards). Any ideas from folks in the field on what has been effective with administrators (1/2 day) in a
workshop. Thanks. Carol
