Course description: Primary focus of this course is the use of the Internet in providing library services. This class is designed for library personnel whose responsibilities include using the Internet for work-related tasks. Through lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on work, students will learn to teach finding, searching, and evaluating online resources to their library patrons.

Course objectives:
students will:
a. more effectively use Internet/online resources and searching tools
b. critically evaluate these resources/tools
c. build training skills
d. have conducted an Internet instruction session (see Final Project below)

Final Project: This project will enable you to showcase the skills you have learned in this class.

At the last class session (March 25), each student will give a 5-minute instructional session to a "patron" (played by the class) on how to use one library resource. This role-play will showcase a resource of the student's choosing and should be played out as if the student were a library staff member at the reference/information desk of a library. You will need to choose a resource that is online so that it can be projected to the entire class as you “teach”. Also prepare a one-page “guide” for what you are teaching using Word's draw features. Hand in this as your final written part of the project.

Also provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope so I can return the “guide” to you.

Have fun with this project!

Attendance: Since this is a short term class, a student must attend all 3 sessions for the full class time each day. Please be prompt!

Student Code of Conduct: Please refer to the DVC Catalog for details.

Class participation: Your wholehearted participation is encouraged in class discussions. We all learn from one another's experiences and questions. There are no dumb questions!
