The Stanford University Libraries/Academic
Information Resources (SUL/AIR) is seeking
highly motivated and qualified candidates for
the position of Head of the Access Services Department.
The Head of Access Services directs a public
services department comprised of several
divisions with different sets of
responsibilities. Three units Privileges,
Scanning Operations, and the Stanford Auxiliary
Libraries—support the needs of all University
Libraries patrons and public services
operations. The other units -- Loan, Reserves,
the Portals, and Stack -- primarily serve the
needs of the users of the Cecil H. Green
Library, Stanford’s main library in the
humanities and social sciences (2.3 million
volumes). The Loan Division handles 500,000
circulation transactions annually. The
Department is responsible for the management of
the Stanford Auxiliary Library, with an
on-campus site and an off-campus High Density
Shelving facility currently housing 1.6 million
items with a planned capacity of 3 million
items. Future modules are being planned.
Responsibilities:
• Recommend, articulate, and administer library
access policies to the University community and
other constituencies within general policies of
SUL/AIR, and in consultation with the AUL for Technical Services.
• Maintain active and effective communication
with a wide range of constituencies, including
faculty, students, University offices, library
departments, and other on- and off-campus
patrons. Work to ensure that services and
planning are coordinated and that policy is
applied and implemented consistently.
• Manage and motivate staff of 35.5 FTE regular
staff and 39.5 FTE hourly staff in five
supervised units. Manage the organization and
allocation of personnel, $3.2 million budget,
and physical facilities in Green and in
auxiliary facilities, with a view to continual process improvement across divisional lines.
Advocate for Access Services in prioritizing Systems queue.
• Coordinate and advocate strategic directions,
projects, and all activities of the Department
with those of the Libraries’ Collections and
Services Program. Collaborate with SULAIR
Systems to prioritize Access Services’
requirements. Participate actively in program
planning within Technical Services, with all
SULAIR units, and with other campus libraries
(Law, Medicine, Business, Hoover, SLAC).
• Lead planning and implementation of the
facility and service programs of off-site high
density shelving facility. Participate in space
planning and project implementation as they
impact the Libraries’ program and building
facilities. Manage the assignment of Green
Library faculty studies and dissertation rooms.
Manage the logistics for mass digitization efforts of Stanford University.
• Manage the implementation and maintenance of
security and preservation measures for buildings
and collections, in consultation with staff in
Facilities, Building Projects, and Preservation Department.
• Maintain active and productive liaison with
the Green Library Information Center as well as all the branch libraries.
Qualifications:
• Requires five years experience managing access
services or comparable public service operation
in medium to large library, preferably in an
academic setting. Experience with online
circulation system in an integrated environment is also required.
• Requires experience managing time, budget, and
staff to meet deadlines in a complex, energetic
environment. Experience with project management,
i.e., developing scope, targets, deadlines, is desirable.
• Requires demonstrated capacity to work
effectively and collegially with all levels of
library staff and patrons, as well as with external associates. Excellent communication
skills in writing and in person are essential.
Experience managing and mentoring professional staff is highly desirable.
• Ability to adapt flexibly to a changing and
sometimes ambiguous environment is required.
• Familiarity with providing services from off-site shelving is desirable.
• MLS from an ALA-accredited program, or the
equivalent in educational experience, is required.
Appointment to the Librarian and Senior
Librarian ranks will be based on breadth and years of relevant expertise.
Background:
The libraries of Stanford University hold 9
million volumes, employ over 500 staff members,
and include the University Libraries system and
five ‘coordinate” (school or institution)
libraries. The Stanford University Libraries
consist of a main research library (Green
Library) and eleven research branch libraries
serving the sciences, social sciences, and
humanities. The Technical Services group has a
staff of over 130FTE in four departments: Access
Services, Acquisitions, Cataloging and Metadata Services, and Preservation. Together they make
available 140,000 new volumes annually by use of
emerging vendor services and continual process
improvement. The Stanford Libraries fosters
