LIBRARY ASSISTANT II (Evening Circulation Supervisor, 50% FTE)

Basic Function and Scope of the Job: The Engineering Library at Stanford
University is open for students, faculty and researchers from 9am to
10pm Monday-Thursday, from 9am to 6pm on Friday, from 9am to 5pm on
Saturday and from 2pm to 10pm on Sunday during the Academic Year. Under
the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, the evening
Circulation Supervisor is responsible for the independent evening
management of the Circulation Desk at the Engineering Library and
providing evening emergency support for the other Science branch
libraries within Stanford University Libraries
Work Schedule: M-Thus 5-10pm (Academic Year) Mon-Fri 1-5pm (Intersession)
Mon-Thus 3-7pm, Fri 1-5pm (Summer Quarter). This is a 50% FTE position,
limited 1 year appointment with possibility of extension.

Example of duties:

90%
1) Establish working familiarity with Unicorn Workflows, including
charging, discharging and other circulation-related tasks.
2) Respond to patron queries, both informational and basic reference.
3) Refer complex reference questions to the Reference Desk or
reference staff.
4) Process patron requests for holds, recalls and renewals, including
e-mail and telephone renewals.
5) Place search requests for patrons.
6) Resolve overdues and bills, referring to the Operations Manager
when appropriate.
7) Resolve patron problems, including claims returned, referring to
the Operations Manager when appropriate.
8) Train and supervise student assistants, including setting their
priorities.
9) Resolve urgent scheduling problems concerning students, referring
to the Operations Manager when appropriate.
10) Report facility problems (e.g. copier problems, cluster problem,
printer problems, lights out, etc.) as appropriate.
11) Shelve materials, including reporting problems in the stacks.
12) Pull materials from the shelves for transfer to storage
13) Open/close the library on assigned shift and as needed.
14) Provide evening backup support for other SERG (Science and
Engineering Resources Group) branch libraries as needed.

1) Backup for serials processing.
2) Backup for gifts/monographs processing.
3) Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications
REQUIRES EXPERIENCE IN AND DEMONSTRATED ABILITY TO: adapt to change;
concentrate on work despite frequent interruptions; move flexibly
between tasks on short notice; work productively under pressure; learn
and synthesize new information quickly; perform and supervise
detail-oriented tasks accurately and efficiently; communicate
effectively in written and oral English; apply knowledge of automated
library systems and databases; use office computers for word processing,
spreadsheets, database management, and communications; take initiative,
set work priorities, and meet deadlines; effectively handle multiple
responsibilities simultaneously; seek constructive solutions to
problems; and apply sound judgment. Strong customer service
orientation, good attendance record, and ability to work evenings and
weekends, occasionally on short notice, are also required. HIGHLY
DESIRED: familiarity with Unicorn, Socrates, CourseWork/Sakai; strong
knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other widely used office
computer applications; knowledge of the structure and organization of
Stanford University and the libraries at Stanford.
