What is Go Girl!

Go Girl! is a gay positive, interactive pinball machine. The visual playing field (where the ball moves through various paths and gullies) references a variety of gay cultural themes with an emphasis on camp. The player must stand in a pair of oversized red high healed shoes to play. A cross- dressing KenŠ doll spins in circles as the ball is put into play. Once in play the ball hits targets which highlight bits of Queer history and culture: E.g..: drag, queer politics, "The Castro", evil homophobes, coming out and safe sex. A computer monitor incorporated into the game's backglass facing the player, displays digitized video of local celebrity Drag Queens who comment upon the players' performance throughout their game. Additional video clips includes footage from the most recent San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Parade. The highlight of playing Go Girl! occurs in "Wig Mode" when live video of the player's face is displayed on the video monitor (via a hidden camera.) A variety of delightful hairdos stored digitally on the computer are overlaid over the player's image. By using the flipper buttons, the player can "try on different hairdoOs" and ultimately freeze their face within a selected wig. A very skilled player can achieve "Make Up Mode," which in addition to the wig, applies makeup over the players' saved image using the same video technology as the "Wig Mode.

Go Girl! is partially funded with grants from the San Francisco Arts Commission and New Langton Arts.
