The SLA Chemistry Division invites submissions for a session on
Collection
Development in the Electronic Age at the Denver 2007 SLA Annual
Conference.
The session will be held on Tuesday, June 5 from 9-10:30 a.m. The
structure will be 10-15 minute presentations with at least 20 minutes
total
reserved for panel discussion/feedback from the audience. Note deadline
for abstract submission is January 5, 2007.
THEME: Collection Development in the Electronic Age
A panel of practicing librarians will share their strategies for the
evaluation, acquisition, and management of electronic books, reference
resources, and journals. Many libraries have converted to
electronic-only
journals. What problems/benefits is this conversion creating? How
does
one determine when it is safe to go electronic only and the cost-benefit
ratio?
Now more and more reference sources and regular books are being offered
in
electronic versions on a variety of platforms. Some of the new e-book
collection platforms offer innovative and library-friendly models
including
1-time purchase of content, e-prices at or near list price of print and
demand-based purchasing.
More questions:
* How does one make good use of use statistics?
* Should preference be given to electronic reference acquisitions over
print?
* Is it realistic to maintain the same content in print and electronic?
* Are there still reservations/resistance to electronic-only collections
among patrons?
* Can we/should we be purchasing content, or are we forever stuck with
never-ending annual subscriptions (i.e. content rental)?
ELIGIBILITY: Any SLA member is welcome to submit an abstract for
consideration. Preference will be given to members of the Chemistry and
other science-oriented divisions of SLA.
CRITERIA: Criteria for review will include relevance to the session
theme
and evidence of scholarship and methodology.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: January 5, 2007.
.

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they are just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution,
man. I wouldn't mess with them."
--- Michael Moore
