Resource Center Assistant Position
Science & Health Education Partnership
University of California, San Francisco

DESCRIPTION

The Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP), located in the Woods
Building on the Parnassus campus, is an academic unit under the auspices of
the UCSF Student Academic Affairs Office. As a partnership between UCSF
and the San Francisco Unified School District, SEP supports science and
health education in the public schools through a variety of programs,
including the SEP Resource Center. The mission of the SEP Resource Center
is to facilitate the implementation of hands-on science and health
education by providing innovative teaching materials for loan to SFUSD
teachers and UCSF volunteers. The Resource Center currently houses over
1200 items including specimens, models, books, lesson plans, videos, kits,
and scientific equipment, covering a wide range of curriculum areas and
grade levels. In collaboration with the SEP staff, the Resource Center
Assistant will work with teachers and volunteers in selecting materials,
creating lesson plans, and planning teaching strategies. She/He will
contribute to the maintenance and expansion of the Resource Center,
including such duties as collecting lesson plans and protocols, providing
support for orientations for volunteers and teachers, organizing Resource
Center materials, and maintaining the Resource Center material and user
databases. She/He must be available to staff the Resource Center during
after-school hours (~3-6 pm) one-two days a week; additional hours to be
determined (8-12 hours per week).

REQUIRED SKILLS

BA or BS in the sciences or substantial work towards a degree; experience
in science education and / or K-12 classroom teaching experience (including
volunteer work or student teaching); flexibility with respect to schedule
and duties; strong organizational skills, motivation, and collaborative
spirit.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Experience with Macintosh platforms, especially FileMaker Pro databases;
California Teaching Credential (multi-subject or single subject) or work
towards a credential; knowledge of San Francisco Unified School District's
schools, curriculum, and teacher and student populations; interest in
science education reform; experience in curriculum development and/or
teacher professional development; experience working with scientists or
health professionals.

PART-TIME VARIABLE:
20-25%, 8-12 hours per week

The exact schedule and number of hours worked monthly by the Resource
Center Assistant may be flexible. This position will continue through May
2000 with the possibility of continuation and increased hours beyond,
including during the summer.

SALARY RANGE
$13.66-16.31 per hour
