Subject: Fe supplement - cereals

That reminds me of a demonstration/experiment that is very enlightening. I haven't done it with my students, but we did it a couple of years ago in a methods course. I had forgotten about it. Now that you remind me, I may use it in my this year's intro to chemistry unit! Thanks!

Perhaps this is old hat to those of you who have been teaching awhile. It was new and exciting to me! This is the experiment:

Take a box of iron-supplemented cereal. (I think we used Total, but I'm not sure) Put a bunch of the cereal in a large beaker with water to cover. Use a magnetic stirrer for long enough to Totally (no pun intended) pulverize the cereal. Pull out the magnet. (The kids will love reaching down into the goo) We found the iron "supplement" attached to the stirrer in the form of SMALL FILINGS! Have the students study and Measure the Fe on the magnetic stirrer.

Very enlightening and a bit scary.

Bon Apetit!
Let me know if you try it!
