Subject: Altitude and Climate

Dear Pinholers,
Does anyone have any kind of demonstration or activity to teach middle school students why temperature decreases with
altitude? Even after several discussions of earth-sun distances and descriptions of density of air at altitude, they still don't
quite understand this phenomenon. Our textbook had a demo using a heat lamp and two thermometers, one on a black mat and one
elevated on top of baby food jars, but not only did it not work, but the science behind it was bad, too (it did lead to some good
discussions about limitations of models, however). Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Carlie
