Subject: Pink Dolphins at Cal Academy

Hi Everyone!

I got a call from the folks at the California Academy of Sciences, asking
me to help publicize a very interesting sounding lecture, happening next
Tuesday, May 23, 7:30 PM at the Academy in Golden Gate Park. Here's the
information as I received it from the Academy:

The California Academy of Sciences presents a special lecture:

Journey of the Pink Dolphins: an Amazon Quest
presented by Sy Montgomery, Naturalist and author of "Spell of the Tiger"
and "Walking with the Great Apes".

Montgomery has made four journeys into the heart of the Amazon River Basin
to study an enigmatic, rare species of freshwater dolphin. Considered the
world's most primitive whale, the pink river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis)
hardly looks like a dolphin at all. The forehead is bulbous, the face ends
in a long, tubular snout, the dorsal fin is just a subtle curve, and the
flippers are as big as wings. Most surprising, coloration can be gray,
white, or even shocking pink.

Montgomery's new book, "Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest",
weaves zoology with myth, natural history with poetry, anthropology with
the supernatural. Her slide lecture presents a picture not only of animal
life but also of human life in the Amazon Basin, and the legenedary role
the pink dolphin plays in the lives of the river people.
