Hi Coco,
Our school has both kinds of generators and they both do about the same job.
In S.F. the main problem is the relative humidity. When it is foggy, neither
one works very well, so I wait for a fairly dry day to use them. Both can be
used to light fluorescent light bulbs. zap students, demonstrate electric
fields, and charge Leiden jars.
