Hello pinholers,
This message is for people who are teaching in middle schools, or who know how your district runs the middle school science program. Specifically I want to know if your district gives the students full years of science, or less than full years of science in the 6th, 7th or 8th grades.
Our dilema is this: For several reasons we have, for many years, had a program where our sixth grade students receive only 1/2 year of science. (They receive full years in seventh and eighth.)
We in the science department feel that a full year is important, warranted, and necessitated by the standards, but we realize that we don't really have data on what the general practice is.
I'm asking for information on whether other schools have 1/2 years of science in sixth grade (or 7th or 8th!). If you know your district's practice, please let me know. I think I'll just start with the following information:
1. 6th grade: Full year or Half year
2. 7th grade: Full year or Half year
3. 8th grade: Full year or Half year
4. Name and location of district
Or if you have an address or contact that would have this information for Peninsula, or Bay Area schools, I'd like to know that, too.
Thanks for any information you send.
