Thanks for the quick pickle reply.
My students observed that the pickle glowed at one end and then switched
around the nails to see if the glow was a result of pickle conformation or
type of wire attached to that end. Only one time (out of three? uh we weren't
very rigorous in our practice) did the position of glow change.
Note: This change of glow position happened early in the glowing career of
that particular pickle.

Does that mean that the glow is more likely to start near the live wire if
