Sally,
Send me an email offlist and I can send you procedures for both the magnesium
oxide lab and a hydrate lab (you can use copper(II)sulfate pentahydrate for
the hydrated salt, or epsom salts MgSO4•7?H20, or others can work). Is there
a reason you don't want to use magnesium - the lab works fairly well, but you
do need some equipment to do it.
What level is this for? I'm teaching at HS level, and assuming you're
working with moles, you are too.
