Science Educator
Institute for Inquiry

SUMMARY
The Exploratorium Institute for Inquiry (IFI) is a National Science
Foundation funded professional development center designed to promote
national leadership in inquiry-based elementary science education
reform throughout the country. Institute programming consists of
workshops, graduate seminars, national forums, teacher research
groups, publications, on-line support for program graduates. Over the
next five years, IFI, will develop five professional development
modules, designed to foster inquiry-based teaching and learning in
k-6 professional development settings. The materials will be
available to educators on the Exploratorium Web site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
… Support local and national elementary educators in professional
development and classroom settings to develop inquiry-based science
teaching practices and exemplary inquiry classrooms both at
Exploratorium and in the field
… Work with a team to develop, test and refine professional development modules
… Work with a team to deliver and design workshops for local and
national professional developers and teachers
… Identify issues and approaches that contribute to the development
of inquiry-based practices; document lessons learned for use in the
Institute's professional development programming and module
development. Disseminate lessons learned through conferences and
papers
… Consult with local and national districts and projects to develop
on-site professional development programming
… Provide occasional assistance on other Exploratorium projects,
including publications, exhibits and multimedia projects

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
… Five years or more experience working with teachers and
administrators outside of the classroom (in professional development
settings)
… Five years or more experience in teaching science in the elementary classroom
… Masters degree or Ph.D. in science, science education or education
preferred or equivalent combination training and experience
… Experience with inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning in science
… Recognized as a promising or outstanding professional developer
(considered a plus)
… Working knowledge of science education reform movements
… Broad interest in and knowledge of science concepts
… Excellent oral and written communication skills
… Experience working with diverse populations at multiple levels
… Ability to work independently and within a team; excellent
interpersonal skills

This is a full-time, exempt, union position and includes full
benefits. Position held on a 10-month year schedule. Salary range
