Came across this website while trying to figure out what a "nocturnal" -
the noun - was.
The website is the outcome of an effort by four European museums to display
their collection of astronomical instruments from before the 1600's to a
wider audience. Great pictures of the instruments (sundials, surveying
instruments, armillary spheres, nocturnals, etc.), descriptions of each
instrument, bibliography, and technical articles about how the instruments
were used (if you ever wanted to know how to use an astrolabe, you'll find
it here).

If you'd like to make a nocturnal to play with, try:

Enjoy.
