Hi Kevin,
Here are some websites that your class may find interesting. This one
http://www.goes.noaa.gov/browsw.html shows current satellite images of the
West Coast. The time and date of the image appear at the top. Time is in
Zulu time, aka Greenwich Mean Time. Your students might need to do some
more research on time and longitude. The general NOAA page is good, too.
http://www.noaa.gov
This page http://facs.scripps.edu/surf/nepa.html shows animated surf
forecasts across the Pacific Ocean. The swell heights are color coded, and
you can get an idea how quickly these North Pacific storms are travelling.
Along with having your students track weather online, I would also
recommend that you have them take their own weather data, and compare it
with "official" weather data, which you can find at:
http://www.sfgate.com/weather
Local precipitation data is at http://www.sfgate.com/weather/rainfall.shtml
One of our TI Alumni teachers showed me how to make an effective and easy
rain gauge. She has each of her 6th graders make one, and each student
takes it home, keeping track of the precipation for the unique microclimate
where they live. This data provides a great opportunity for integrating
math and science, and for introducing the idea of microclimates. Let me
know if you want me to send you the rain gauge instructions.
Good luck,
Lori
