Hi Mike,
My suggestion is not to bother with atomic theory and simply develope the
periodic table based chemical properties of the elments. Perhaps an historic
approach to periodic tables (there have been several before modern atomic
theory developed) would be a good way to get 8th graders involved in this
fundamental road map to chemistry.
