They all should be great!

AEROSPACE EDUCATION WORKSHOP FOR K-8 TEACHERS
THEME: SUN EARTH CONNECTION
NASA AMES EDUCATOR RESOURCE CENTER
FEBRUARY 7, 8, & 9, 2002

Dear Educator,
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the first
NASA Ames ERC Workshop to be held in this new year. Led by NASA
Aerospace Education Specialist Tom Gates, we will be exploring
"Sun-Earth Connections" through hands-on activities appropriate for
K-8 Classroom incorporation. Our choice of topic for this February
workshop was prompted by the approach of NASA's Sun Earth Day on
March 20, 2002. Sun Earth Day provides a wonderful opportunity to
study weather, seasons, food chain/ energy cycles, light, and of
course THE SUN! This workshop will give you the opportunity to access
NASA's many educational resources to support Sun Earth Day in your
classroom. Attached you'll find our workshop flyer as well as a map
to the ERC. We've pushed the deadline back a bit, and registration is
now required by January 25. For college credit you must attend all 3
days, and bring a check for $50 made out to CSUS. If you have any
questions at all please don't hesitate to call. I look forward to
seeing you here at the NASA Ames Educator Resource Center!

Sincerely,
Melissa Maradiegue
ERC Manager

A variety of NASA discoveries are utilized in educational materials
to bring teachers information and hands-on activities for use in the
classroom. All sessions include handouts of NASA and other relevant
educational materials. Correlations to California Standards are
included.

Number of Units: 1 semester hour

  Thursday, February 7th 4 to 7 pm
MOON/METEORITE SCIENCE & CERTIFICATION
Using NASA Moon rock and meteorite samples as contrast materials, a
session relating to rocks, minerals and geology units in school
curriculum is presented with certification allowing participant
teachers to receive NASA Moon rock and meteorite sample disks on loan
for use in their classroom. [Note: A session on NASA educational
resources and Web sites will be held concurrently for those teachers
already Moon/Meteorite certified.]

Friday, February 8th 4 to 7 pm
THE SUN IN THE SKY
Using star and constellation locators, we explore basic sky motions,
stars and constellations and the Sun's appearance in the skies.
Activities for use in the classroom help explain the basics behind
the Sun's sky location and time, seasons and yearly course.

Saturday, February 9th 9 am to 4 pm
REASONS FOR THE SEASONS
Seasons are explored using hands on activities and demonstrations
which illustrate why we have seasons and lead to an understanding of
the concepts for the same.

SUN, SOURCE OF OUR ENERGY
Using light analyzers, infrared and ultraviolet light detectors,
teachers use hands on activities to bring students to the
understanding of the Sun as the source of all our energy on Earth.
We learn how energy we get from hydroelectric, fossil fuel burning
and other sources all come from the Sun.
