Subject: student question about wet clothes and why they look darker

I have a student who wants to know why clothes appear
darker when they get wet. It seems simple, but it has
stumped the science department here (the simple
sounding ones always do). Can anyone offer any
possible answers that I could bring back to him and
the rest of the class?
