Eric,

Check out references on primitive bow construction (archery). Lots of designs employ "backing" on the side of the bow away from the archer. A bow must withstand both compression and tension, so this might be an interesting study. Some of the more unusual designs (Turkish composite bow, etc.) employ many different materials throughout the bow, placing materials with different properties in different locations. I seem to remember a Scientific American cover article on those bows. Have fun!
