Tape works because of the stretching during manufacture, aligning polymer
molecules.
Spray would be random.

BUT...
if you spray saturated Epson Salts or Alum,the crystals, as they form, will
align in various ways.
I think I remember some such crystals will twist polarized light (old chem
film from the 70's)
Crystal size would depend on saturation level, rate of evaporation.
