Hi Pinhole Friends,
Here are some math opportunities in which you may be interested. The
Family Math project now includes middle school. Read on for more
information:

EQUALS Involving Families in Math
Summer 2002

Dear Educator:

Are you looking for ways to involve parents at your school? This summer,
EQUALS invites you to focus on family involvement through our FAMILY MATH
program.

When teachers and parents join together, children have a greater
opportunity to enjoy mathematics success. Our summer program prepares
parents, teachers, and the community at large to conduct FAMILY MATH
classes. This is a perfect way to improve parent advocacy in your school.

We encourage teams of teachers and parents to attend FAMILY MATH for Young
Children and FAMILY MATH for Middle School. Participants will leave these
workshops (described below) as inspired class leaders.

All workshops qualify for Title I, Eisenhower, and Migrant Education funds.
The workshop location is the Lawrence hall of Science at UC Berkeley.

Check our web site at http://www.lawrencehallofscience.org/equals for more
information and application. Please share this information with interested
teachers and parents.

FAMILY MATH-The Middle School Years
July 25-26, 2002
2 days

How can families of middle school children become stronger advocates for
their children's mathematics education? This workshop will focus on
activities and information that middle school parents should know to help
their children succeed in math.

Teachers and parents will be prepared to conduct FAMILY MATH for Middle
School (FMMS) classes in their community. FMMS is based on the following
principles.
* It is critical for parents to become advocates for their children's
middle school mathematics education.
* Parents and children can work together on activities that encourage
exploration, investigation, and communication.
* Success in mathematics can impact a child's future.

Math topics covered will include algebra and number sense. Each
participant will receive a FAMILY MATH-The Middle School Years book.

Who should attend:
Educators, parents, and anyone else who works with middle school youth.
Teams of parents and teachers are encouraged to attend.

FAMILY MATH for Young Children PreK-3
July 23-24, 2002
2 days
It's never too early to begin nurturing a child's interest in mathematics.
With over 80 international sites, FAMILY MATH is a dynamic global network
of mathematics learners, educators, and advocates. FAMILY MATH for Young
Children (FMYC) brings caregivers of children of ages 4 to 8 together for
the purpose of exploring mathematics.

This inservice is designed to prepare teachers, parents, and other
interested persons to conduct FMYC classes in their community. FMYC is
based on the following principles.
* Young children understand the world through experience.
* Mathematical thinking emerges naturally.
* Families with young children can have fun exploring math together.

Math topics covered will include developing number sense, geometry,
measurement, algebra, and logical thinking. Each participant will receive
a FAMILY MATH for Young Children book.

Who should attend:
PreK-3 educators, parents, and other interested adults wishing to
strengthen the bridge between home and school in their community. Teams of
parents and teachers are encouraged to attend.
