Hi Pinhole Friends,
Here are some more ideas for professional development this summer. Some
cost money, some offer stipends, some offer college credit, some are for
science teachers, some are for math teachers.....read on for more
information. Please feel free to share this information with your
colleagues.

1) Project ASTRO Training Workshop
Dates: August 16 -17
For: 4th - 9th grade teachers
Where: San Mateo County Office of Education
Focus: Project ASTRO teachers are paired with astronomers who will visit
their classrooms (at least four times during the school year) and help
teach astronomy. These astronomers lead hands-on activities, answer
questions, talk about their own work and interests with your students.
Fee: Suggested administrative contribution: $40 from your school's staff
development funds - No one will be excluded because of lack of funds.

2) Algebra Institute
Dates: June 18 - July 3
For: Math teachers, grades 6 - 12
Where: Borel Middle School, San Mateo
Focus: The focus of this institute will be on the math and providing
information and materials to broaden and deepen content knowledge.
Instructors: Judy Kysh, Alison Shulz, and Lisa Kossiver
Fee: $200 (Eisenhower, Title I or other prof. dev. funds may be used)
Perks: Stipend of $1000 plus 3 units of academic credit in Mathematics
suitable for a Supplementary Authorization in math (for an additional fee).

3) Lesson Study - Summer Lab School
Dates: August 5 - Aug. 16
For: Math teachers, K - 12 (teams from same school are encouraged to apply)
Where: San Mateo - Foster City School District Office, San Mateo
Focus: Building an in-depth understanding of Lesson Study and math content
related to algebra readiness, as well as an opportunity to work with
Japanese teachers.
Instructors: Jackie Hurd, Barbara Scott, Kathy Bertonneau, April
Cherrington, Catherine Lewis, and two Japanese teachers.
Fee: $200
Perks: Stipend of $1000 for summer, plus $500 for 20 hours of follow-up
work during the school year.

4) AIMS Science Connections
Dates: August 12 - 16
For: Teachers grades K - 5
Focus: Integrating math and science with hands-on lessons.
Fee: $335 (Eisenhower funds may be used)
Perks: Over $100 worth of materials, plus 100 or more AIMS activities and
duplication rights.
