One of the TI Alumni (thanks, Dr. SP!) passed this on to the group -- see
details below. Nice detail about the raw eggs.

I'm not sure it's the -first- "national rocket competition for high
school and junior high school students;" as an Old Person, I recall a few
in the early 1960s, in reaction to Sputnik. And if you've read Homer
Hickam's autobiography, _Rocket Boys_, or seen the surprisingly good film
_October Sky_ based on the book, such a contest propels the last
chapters. (Though these kids would have built rockets anyway with
no incentive but the fascination of the the idea.) The film especially is
a beautiful lesson on making mistakes, analyzing them, and doing
progressively better each time: basic scientific method. And no, we don't
have these in the Learning Studio, though they're on the wish list.

Meanwhile, you might look at the government's Centennial of Flight
website, at:

    http://www.centennialofflight.gov/calendar_cf/calendar.cfm

It includes downloadable bookmarks and posters as well as some great
history stuff, webcasts, everything you could possibly want to know about
the Wright Brothers, and, for those with hot enough computers, a " Sights
& Sounds of Aviation" section with movies, still images, and a link to the
Library of Congress special collections.

Even paper airplanes.

Team America Rocketry Challenge

I thought your members and the teachers they represent might be interested
in knowing about the Team America Rocketry Challenge, a one-time,
non-money-making event we are sponsoring to celebrate next year's
centennial of flight.

The Challenge is the first national rocket competition for high school and
junior high school students. Teams will be competing for $59,000 dollars
in prizes by designing, building, and launching a model rocket carrying
two raw eggs to exactly 1500 feet, while returning both eggs to the earth
unscrambled! The contest is limited to a total of 500 US high school
teams and each school may enter two teams. The deadline to enter the
Challenge is November 15, 2002.

Detailed information about the contest, including our long list of
educational partners, is located at www.aia-aerospace.org or
www.rocketcontest.org.

I hope you will pass this information on to your members so they can make
sure their students and teachers have the opportunity to participate in
this fun and educational event.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 202-371-8514 or
jstevens@aia-aerospace.org.

Thanks!
