Subject: - Learning Studio - week of August 11

Folks:

Many more e-texts this week, and I spent very little time looking for stuff
this month, I just (again) found lots of rich veins of texts. This week
there several historical texts on genetics and evolution as well as quite a
variety of electronic periodicals.

WEB PAGE OF THE WEEK:

Underwater Field Guide to Ross Island & McMurdo Sound, Antarctica
http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/nsf/fguide/index.html

A great place to get simple information, with lots of pictures, of various
animals. My favorite is Glyptonotus antarcticus
(http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/nsf/fguide/arthropoda1.html) which Jo described
as an aquatic roach, my reply was "is it good with butter?"

UPDATED WEB GUIDES:

For a full list of the Learning Studio web guides see:

http://www.exploratorium.edu/ls/infosources/ResGuides.html

Several pages had a few links added.

These pages had a bit more done:

        Earth System Science

        General Science

        Hydrosphere

        Paleobiology

        Polar Studies

The San Francisco Bay Area Related Resources pages had a major work over,
about time I had not touched it since November.

PRINTED, NEW ACQUISITIONS:

An affair with Africa : expeditions and adventures across a continent /
Alzada Carlisle Kistner.
General collection circ.
QL 568 .K55 1998

The account of a series of entomology expeditions in several African
countries. Using such traditional scientific tools like aspirators and
pickaxes they located and captured their small prey. Of course a lot more
happens on such expeditions, long road trips, lions sleeping under the
rover, outbreaks of fighting and such other everyday matters not different
from research in many other parts of the world.

NEW INTERNET eTEXTS:

Each week I will list online materials are freely available over the Internet.
These materials were located in the past week by Learning Studio staff.

Some of these documents may be in PDF format and require the use of a free
reader.

This week I again highlight a page, this time the standards page at the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
http://www.nbpts.org/standards/standards.html

I also include the Mathematics and Science standards (two each, four in
all) below. I include NBPTS in the entry for easy searching.
