Subject: size of detergent molecule

hello

it's been a while since any of us physics people here
have done the size of a detergent molecule lab and
we've run into an interesting phenomenon. Basically
the idea was do drop a drop of dishwashing detergent
into a bowl of starchy water to form a monolayer and
then measure the area of the layer of detergent.
Well, when we drop the drop, it spreads clear to the
sides of our tank of water. We've had to dilute the
detergent to a 200:1 ratio to get the monolayer to a
measureable size. What's the scoop? Are we using
concentrated detergent?

keepin the funk alive through physics
