You are right, any demo that goes boom should be behind a protective shield.
My understanding about methanol being used in my whoosh bottle demo is that
the equilibrium vapor pressure of methanol is exactly right when mixed with
air to form an explosive mixture. This effect would be true for most ambient
temperatures. Other alcohols or organic coumpounds do not have the right
vapor presure to make an explosive mixture in air. My demo requires shaking
the methanol vigorously to establish equlibrium before applying the Tesla
coil.
