For science reading grades 5-8, try the Deep Time Diaries
by Gary Raham (published by Fulcrum). It is a science
fiction based on fact account of a family travelling
together through geologic time. A brother and sister keep
journal entries about each "Jump" through time. It is
written in child/teenage "voice" with excellent scientific
descriptions of many difficult concepts explained in
"student language!" Many useful resources, maps and
explanations follow each chapter. The illustrations are
outstanding.
