Hey Paul,
How's that? The presence of any solute in water lowers its chemical potential
so that the vapor/liquid equilibrium curve in the phase diagram for water is
lower. As a result, the triple point for water occurs at a lower temperature
and water freezes at lower temperature. Also, as a result of the lower
chemical potential, water boils at a HIGHER temperture.
