In a word, Alka Seltzer Rockets. In spite of the recent disaster, the
shuttle program educational outreach activities should not be abandoned
(neither should the shuttle program). Have the kids build rockets out
of film cannisters, custom designed nose cones & fins attached. Then
have them MEASURE the height/distance of their first attempt. Then have
them experiment with modifications to see if they can improve the
performance.

This is a primary unit which can be modified to include the science &
math objects of higher grade level
I used this project successfully at several grade levels.
