Subject: Teaching positions

TEACHING POSITIONS:

Hillsdale High School, in collaboration with Stanford University's
School of Education, our Professional Development School Partner, is
involved in major school reform. We will begin the implementation of
Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) in August 2003.

To meet the challenges of the 21st century, we must educate all
students, regardless of social, economic, or educational background. If
we hold all students to high standards, then we must provide the
necessary support systems for students to reach these goals. We must
also provide a structure that will enable teachers to employ the best
strategies and to provide greater personal care for their individual
students.

Hillsdale's SLC model includes the following features:

• All freshmen will be equitably placed into one of four houses
consisting of approximately 80 students each.
• Four subject area teachers: English, Social Science (Modern World
History, Math (Algebra and Geometry), and Science (Biology), will be
assigned to each of the four houses. All freshmen will be enrolled in
these courses.
• Faculty within each house will teach four academic classes of 20
students each and will be assigned a group of approximately twenty
students for an Advisory period.
• Teachers within the houses will have a preparation period and a
collaboration period.
• To the greatest possible extent, all freshmen will loop into the
sophomore year with the same group of four teachers. (though this may not be
possible in science)
• Professional Development will be provided to allow staff members to
meet the challenges of the new system.

To implement Smaller Learning Communities at Hillsdale we will need to
hire the following teachers:

Science: 3.2 (Biology, Biology-Chemistry)
Math: 1.0
English 1.0
Soc. Sci. 2.0 (Modern World History)

We believe this reform will offer a unique opportunity for our students
and our staff. If you share our goals and would like to learn more about
Hillsdale, we invite your application. We will interview during the next
several weeks and, where matches are found, we will make commitments for
employment pending final budget decisions.
