Subject: AGU meeting in December
Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 12:28:19 -0700

I'd like to advertise two opportunities at this year's AGU (American
Geophysical Union) Fall Conference in San Francisco for High School
teachers (entering and currently teaching) of Earth Sciences and their
students.

#1: Workshop on climate change for Earth Science teachers
#2: A poster session and symposium for high school students who have
been conducting Earth Sciences research. (Abstract deadline fast
approaching: September 5).

For more information...

#1: There is a 2-day workshop for teachers on "The Polar Regions -
Bellwethers of Change" -- A Geophysical Information for Teachers (GIFT)
Workshop. When: Tuesday & Wednesday, December 9-10, 2003 (8:00 AM -
3:30 PM); Where: Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco, California

The program for this fall's GIFT Workshop will span two days, although
participants have the option of attending one day only. The Tuesday
session and Wednesday morning session will feature AGU scientists
summarizing their recent polar research and sharing supporting
curricular materials for K-14 classrooms. Workshop participants will be
able to visit technical presentations and the main Exhibit Hall of the
AGU Meeting (December 8-12) on Wednesday afternoon. Continuing
Education Unit credits will be available for this workshop.

The 2003 AGU GIFT Workshop is free for Bay Area teachers who register by
Friday November 21, 2003. Space is limited to 50 participants and will
be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to register
early. More information about the detailed program can be obtained by
contacting Dr. Jill Karsten, AGU Manager of Education and Human
Resources, at jkarsten@agu.org or 1-800-966-2481 ext. 508. Complete
registration information is available on the back of the attached flyer.

#2: I'm hoping that teachers who are actively conducting earth science
research with local high schools students can take advantage of the
poster session and symposium. Note: abstract deadline is fast
approaching -- September 5. The students submit regular AGU abstracts
and present their research in a special 2-hour afternoon poster session.
In the morning, we have them listen to some talks by 4-5 AGU members
about their research fields.

If you know of anyone else who might be interested, please forward on
this e-mail.
