Carol,

The stuff you want is usually referred to as "showerboard" and is available in the sheet goods (plywood, wallboard, etc.) area of home improvement stores. They sometimes charge to have it cut, but if you catch a nice guy on a good day (or tell them you're a teacher, or beg ... whatever your preferred method of getting freebies is) he'll do it for free. You can have them cut smaller, but if you want to be able to use them for groups of 2-4 students, we found cutting into about 6 pieces gave a good size. (Cutting into 8 is easier, but the pieces were a little small for groups to present in class.) If you want to do six pieces, have them split the 4'x8' sheet lengthwise, then cut each half into 32" pieces. This will give you six 24"x32" boards from each sheet. One note -- if you get enough to do a whole class in pairs (about 3 full sheets), the stuff is pretty heavy. Handle it a few pieces at a time unless you really enjoy the workout. Also, get some rags (old towels are great)
to use as erasers -- they work a lot better than the regular whiteboard erasers. As for inexpensive markers, I have no idea. I just always got to the supply shipments before everyone else! ;-)
