Here is a field trip for people interested in earth sciences. Teachers
have attended similar field trips with these leaders in the past. There
is very limited registration.

Formation, Black Diamond Mines Regional
Preserve, Mt. Diablo

9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Saturday October 11, 2003

Due to safety regulations, there is a strict limit
of 30 and there can be no on-site registration.
If demand is high, there may be a second trip
added on Sunday, October 12.

Leaders:
–Morgan D. Sullivan, Department of Geosciences,
California State University, Chico
–Raymond Sullivan, Department of Geosciences,
San Francisco State University

The Black Diamond Mines Reserve was the location
in the last century of the largest coal mining
operation in California. The field trip will
explore the geology in the underground workings
of this historic site. Exposed at Black Diamond
Mines Regional Preserve is one of the most
complete Tertiary sections in the Coast Ranges.

Driving directions: Black Diamond Mines Regional
Preserve is reached by taking Highway 4 to
the Somersville Road exit and continuing south
to the park entrance in Markley Canyon.
– Meet at 9 am at the Somersville parking lot, beyond
the rangers’ station at the end of the road.
– Park entrance fee will be waived.
– Bring your own lunch.
– Dress warmly for the underground portion of
the trip. Hard hats and flashlights provided.

Cost:
– $10 for students/$20 for professionals
–$10 extensive fieldtrip guidebook
(includes access fees and equipment use).
All registrants will also receive a complimentary
pass to the California Academy of Sciences in
Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
