Hi Treena,
As far as I know, Diatomaceous earth is used as a
swimming pool filter due to the shape of the diatoms.
They have lots of little spikes and pits to catch
particulates suspended in the water.
Sand will also work as a filter, but diatomaceous
earth is better because of the irregularities in
shape.
Hope I'm not way off base here.
