Hi Mike,
Dissolving the can requires using 1.0 molar sodium hydroxide solution. Be
aware that 1 M NaOH is strong enough to cause severe burns to human skin and can
cause blindness if the solution touches the eye. Also when NaOH is dissolved
in water, a great deal of heat energy is released, so the solid NaOH should be
added in small amounts with constant stirring. Obviously, this demo is not for
students to do and teachers should proceed with caution.
