Dear jennie,
If you are in San Francisco, then check out the Science and Health Education
Partnership at UCSF. They have a large database of scientists volunteers at
all levels of training (from graduate student to faculty) that might be
interested in mentoring a student. (http://www.ucsf.edu/sep/ (415)
476-0300). They're just plain a great resource if you are a teacher anyway.

If you are in the East Bay, the Community Resource for Science
(http://www.crscience.org/index.html (510) 654-6433) is a possibility. They
focus on elementary school but have a program where they send scientists
into classrooms and one or more of those scientists might be interested in
working with your student.

There's a group of scientists called AWIS (American Women in Science) that
have chapters across the bay area, each with an education and outreach arm.
The scientists I have met through there have all been excited about reaching
out to kids and teachers and might love to mentor your student.

Finally, there is BABEC (the Bay Area Biotechnology Education Consortium).
They also have contacts to working scientists as well as putting on programs
for kids in schools and after-school/summer programs. http://www.babec.org/

As a last resort, prior to becoming a teacher, I was a research scientist at
UCSF (studied the effects of drugs on the brain) and would be happy to meet
with your student if none of the other links pan out.

Good luck!
