Subject: Re: Water in Arctic (density)

There's a great video, "Under the Antarctic Ice", that shows the
high-salinity brines formed with the sea ice (as the freshwater converts
to ice, leaving the remaining water pockets much saltier) dropping
through the ice into the water below. This water immediately sinks
through the surrounding water to the bottom, where it spreads out --
simulating the much larger-scale bottom currents of the world's oceans
(aside from Red Sea and Med Sea intermediate waters, the saltiest waters
in the world), which originate in the polar seas from ice formation and
then move down and outward under all the world's oceans. The movie
illustrates the process very well. AND...it shows the interaction
between these supercooled brines (much lower freezing point, so can get
super cold) and the normal cold polar seawater (also lower freezing
point than freshwater, but nowhere near what the brines experience). The
proximity of the supercooled brines causes the seawater to cool below
its freezing point, and frozen tunnels (brine channels) form as the
brines sink through the seawater. Amazing footage!

Hi,

I am looking into buying some replacement pH meters for my school.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations about the best type of
pH meters to be used in regular chemistry & AP chemistry high school
classes?

Thanks,
Geoff

Paul, I thought you might be able to answer this question from our
Earth
Science text, I have my theories, but...

"Would you expect the seawater just below the floating ice in the
Arctic
Ocean to be higher or lower in salinity than the water in the deep
zone
there? Explain."

Would this apply to Antarctic waters as well?

There's a great activity that Paul showed one summer.
You put a magnet inside an earth squish-ball and then
sprinkle staples over it. The staples line up with
the magnetic field. Recently, I saw a science catalog
that's selling these so you don't have to cut open a
squish ball. However, my department didn't keep the
catalog and now I can't find them anywhere. Does
anyone know which company was selling them? Thank
you!!

My school is considering science sequence changes. If your school does physics in 9th grade, conceptual physics, what happens when you do the CST subject area tests at the end of the year? Are the students' math skills adequate? Do you have to supplement the conceptual physics math with some more traditional, of plug and chug, or drill and kill math work?

Looking for some data, Ellen Koivisto School of the Arts, SF

Arbor Scientific has the magnetic squish balls. Last year's price was $11.
