I'm writing to solicit your help in recruiting research
participants for study being conducted by SRI
International and funded by the National Science
Foundation Teacher Professional Continuum Program. The
focus of the study is understanding biology teachers'
instructional decision making and reasoning strategies.

We are recruiting 80 current and former high school
biology teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Participation in the study involves 1 session lasting
approximately 60 to 90 minutes in the summer or fall of
2004. Participants will be given a fictional teaching
scenario along with instructional materials and data
samples (such as lesson plans, student work, assessment
data) and asked to reason aloud about instructional
decisions they would make. All participants will be paid
$75 in the form of a gift certificate to Target and
Amazon.com.

I'd like to ask your help in contacting teachers who might
be interested in participating. We are recruiting research
participants with three different profiles:

    1. Experienced biology teachers with 7 or more years
of experience and a single-subject teaching certificate in
life science/biology
    2. Novice biology teachers with 2-4 years of
experience and a single-subject teaching certificate in
life science/biology
    3. Master biology teachers who are currently teaching
at the high school level or former classroom teachers who
are now teacher education faculty, curriculum specialists,
staff developers, or other science education occupations.

We are particularly interested in recruiting teachers who
have:

     * Completed (or are sitting for) National Board
Certification in science.
     * Participated in collaborative professional
practices, such as Lesson Study or group assessment of
student work.
     * Participated in an NSF- or State-funded science
professional development program.
     * Moved into science teaching from another
science-related career.

If you know anyone who fits these profiles or if you know
a group or organization we should talk to, please send
their contact information to Jeff.Huang@sri.com or forward
this email to them.

Candidates must contact us by June18, 2004 to be eligible
to participate in the study.

Best regards,
Valerie Crawford
