Subject: St. Elmo's fire / Krakatoa

Can someone explain St. Elmo's fire? I know it is a penomenon related to
lightening. I am reading "Krakatoa" which mentions it and I'd like to
read up on it.

The book, BTW, is great. There should be some estimate of the size of
these volcanic explosions somewhere...
