I have a notebook, a composition to be specific, because they have a
special durablity that spiral and other binding types cannot claim ...
where students take notes and record the daily learning goal and make
lab notes during class as needed, or lecture notes

(though I'm in a middle school and lecture notes are not happening
really in my lower grades ...4-6 ... I focus on far point copying ...
)

Anyway, students reflect on what they learned after each unit, this
may be a follow up a to KWL ... they are held to language arts grammar
and spelling standards when I periodically check this NB, especially
in the paragraph style reflection. The reflection goes for units,
field trips, assemblies ... whatever ...

Be specific about assigning certain vocab word they must incorporate
into the reflection. I advise directing them to underline those
terms. I also direct students, after enough officious babble, not to
write what they think I want to read ... but what they actually
learned, include some new and interesting thing that you didn't know
before.

As for accoutability, mine is part of NB, so with that, I found that I
don't have to read them right away, like the day it's due, just stamp
it, students will do ANYTHING for a stamp, btw, any age too .... and
then I read them when I do NB checks.

Contact me personally to disucuss any of this further
