Geoff,

Not sure, but your guess about cracking the sheets of
glass is probably correct. Have you tried just
applying a border of some material? (tape, glue,
caulking, etc) I guess you could get artsy and go
back to the supplier and get the lead strips (or
whatever alloy they'er using now) that they use when
assembling stained glass and try edging them with
that, but that would probably be way more work and
money than it's worth.
