Subject: Pinhole-Education and the Environment Initiative -- request for comment on draft documents

HI Pinhole Teachers,

I received this today and wanted to pass it on to all of you as I know you
are all environmentally savvy and could give great input. Please, if you have
the time, could you check this out and give feedback. Thank you for any effort
you can give.

Take care,
Sue Pritchard

Here is what I received:

I am seeking your assistance in helping us get input from science educators
across California.

This is an important opportunity for California's teachers to have input into
the implementation of this important legislation.

Please help us distribute this information below to your colleagues.

Thank you for your consideration.

The Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) [Pavley, Chapter 665,
Statutes of 2003 -- AB1548] directs the California Environmental Protection Agency
and the California Integrated Waste Management Board, to work in cooperation
with the State Department of Education, State Board of Education, Secretary
for Education and Resources Agency to:

* develop education principles and concepts for the environment for
elementary and secondary schools.

* ensure that the education principles and concepts for the environment are
aligned to the academic content standards adopted by the State Board of
Education and do not duplicate or conflict with any academic content standards.

* incorporate education principles for the environment in criteria
developed for textbook adoption in Science, History/Social Sciences, Mathematics and
English/Language Arts.

* develop and disseminate a "model curriculum" to teach the environmental
principles and concepts.

We are seeking your assistance in getting comments from K-12 educators on
this draft alignment of the Environmental Principles and Concepts to California's
Content Standards in science and history/social science. The purpose of this
alignment is to ensure that the instructional strategies developed for
teaching these principles and concepts will help students achieve mastery of
California's content standards. This alignment will be used to develop a scope and
sequence for teaching the environmental principles and concepts in conjunction
with other approaches to standards-based instruction.

Please help us by reviewing the draft standards alignment documents and
background information can be accessed at:
<http://www.calepa.ca.gov/Education/Alignment/> http://www.calepa.ca.gov/Education/Alignment/. This website also
provides specific instructions for participating in the comment process.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
